While hot springs are still my favorite source of relaxation, my friend is slowly convincing me of the beauty in the “totonoe” lifestyle. It is a three-step process consisting of entering the sauna, then cooling off in cold water, then relaxing for a moment before repeating the process three or four times. This sauna experience has been done for hundreds of years in Finland and has become popular here in Japan.
Recently, I went to Towadako Sauna and Idobata Sauna. Towadako Sauna was a fantastic experience. The owner spared no expense, and the beautiful nature surrounding the sauna made for an unforgettable time. Cooling off in Towada lake might sound crazy, but it truly feels amazing after sweating in the sauna!
Idobata was a K-truck converted into a sauna. It was very nice, and the location next to the river and waterfall made the experience even better. There were also old miso barrels used for cold baths, which made me hungry for miso ramen! haha. There are many saunas throughout Akita and the Tohoku area. Maybe it is time for “Adventures in Akita!” to become “Adventures in Tohoku!” With that said, the BES Adventurer must continue the journey around beautiful Akita! Any suggestions on hidden treasures in Akita, please let me know!
